When I came in this class, I did not expect it to be this stressful. Last year's class warned me, but I thought "I have good time management" and I was wrong. I should have had a schedule for my art since day 1. It would have helped a lot in the end. But with all the stress that came with it, there was an equal amount of good times. I can honestly say that I am relatively close with everybody in the class. I look forward to coming to class and talking with all the people in my table and the class. I especially loved all the parties we had. But with that came a lot of stress. It was the hardest class I had this year. At once point I was multiple pieces behind, and then I was ahead, it was like a roller coaster. One of the things that saved me was taking drawing. I put a lot of pieces I did in drawing in my breadth because I really enjoyed them. This class taught me some important skills though, it really taught me time management and how I would rather work on a piece at home everyday then finish half of it the night before. I also learned to expand on my art and learned new mediums like oil, scratch board, and mixed media. While l the second half of the year was more stressful, it was fun to branch off and. come up with a concentration and be able to explore it and form it on my own. I signed up for this class because I wanted to take another class with Mrs. Rossi, and in the end it was worth it. Even though I won't be going to college for art, I have 24 pieces that I'm proud of and hope to be able to continue art in the future
My final concentration piece is about the song St. Jimmy by Green Day. The song is about the character in the album, American Idiot, and how the other character, St. Jimmy influences him to do bad stuff like drugs. For my piece I did a silhouette with a hole in the brain to symbolize that Jimmy is infiltrated in his thoughts. Then for the background I did colors that symbolized basic emotions, like blue for sadness, yellow for happiness, and red for rage. I then put words that were in the song like love, rage, and war. Some things I liked about this piece was how the background turned out. It’s simple but looks good. The hardest thing about this piece was putting things together, because I kept adding stuff as I went along because I kept thinking it wasn’t enough. In the end I thought this piece ended up well and was a good way to end my concentration.
This piece is about the song Mercedes Benz by Janis Joplin. The song is about how she just randomly started singing the song in a bar with her friends keeping the beat with beer bottles. I can to love this song because we danced to it recently in dance. With this piece being my second to last piece, I wanted to finish it quickly, so I picked pen and water color, which is a combination of mediums i have never done before. Overall I really like how this piece turned out, and it's one of my favorites on my concentration. Some things I liked about this piece is the color scheme. I didn't want it to be basic colors, since when I think of Janis Joplin I think of more bright colors. Some things that were hard for me for this piece was the watercolor. I haven't really done watercolor since art 2, so some things I had trouble with was blending out the watercolor till it faded from the dark to the white. I had to go over it with water a lot so the brushstrokes didn't show.
This piece is about the song Somewhere Only We Know by Keane. The song is about how going to place, whether it be an actual place or just with another person, where you feel safe and alone. I wanted to create a type of realistic dream world, somewhere you can escape to. I did palette knife for this piece because I needed to get pieces done faster, and that medium is fast for me, plus it was going to be a landscape. I wanted to add some sort of media element to it so I included a quote by Rohl Dahl in the middle. Some successes I had with this piece is the colors. I wanted the sky to not just be plain blue, so I made it teal with some green and purple in it to give it a not so realistic color. Some things that I had trouble with was mixing the colors in the tree. I did the tree black first, so it was hard to go back and mix other colors in. I had to let it dry for a few days before adding red and purple to it, and even then I had to add brighter colors than I would have thought for. If I were to go back to this piece, I would add some more details in the hills on the side. o
This piece is about the song Rocket Man by Elton John. The meaning behind the piece is that it is based of the book The Rocket Man by Rad Bradbury. The book is from the perspective of a child whose father is going into space and is unsure about leaving his family and the dangers space has. To represent that I first channeled my inner DIY mom and made a galaxy with sponging and splattering on paint. Then to represent the little boy I did a silhouette with him pointing up at the moon that has representations of the uneasiness and worries his dad was feeling, like explosions or the word unknown. This piece was really fun to do mainly because of the background. It didn't involve a huge amount of thought, just putting colors on a paper. Overall I think the piece went well. Some things I didn't like was that when I finished it felt blank to me and I felt like I needed to add more, but I didn't know what, but also at the same time I felt like it didn't need more. But in the end I'm satisfied.
This piece is based off of the song Everybody's Fool by Evanescence. The song was about her sister becoming what she considered "fake" and pretending to be someone they aren't just to be accepted and fit in to society. For this I did a woman peeling off a mask that has the qualities of a perfect girl with makeup on, and the face underneath contained words that pertain to the subject, like "vision" and "perfect". This was one of the first pieces where I had to work smaller because of time. It definitely helped. Some things I liked about this piece is how the composition flows nicely, and the colors also flow together well, like the dark sky blue background against the purple shirt. It didn't take away from the main subject of the piece. Some things I can improve about this piece is the hand. It was a difficult hand position to draw, and still doesn't look right to me. If I were to add to the piece, I would add more elements into the mask like eyeshadow, or the face behind it. Overall I thought this piece turned out good and neat.
The song this piece is based off of is For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield. The song is about the protests that took place after the Pandora's Box nightclub closed, which was a popular nightclub in the 60s. The protest was peaceful, but turned violent when the police showed up. I felt like the song can relate very easily to times now. For the piece I did an up close of the front on the night club, with protesters in the windows. The background is a collage of images from that night and the protests. What I like about the piece is contrast between the color of the nightclub and the black and white of the background. With this piece I was able to get it done in the timeframe it needed to be done, which was a nice change. It turned out to be one of my favorites. Some things I struggled on was getting the background to blend with the paint portion of it, because if I would paint over it you could tell the places I could, so I used a lot of gel medium and did multiple paint layers over it.
The song I choose for my sixth concentration piece was Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People. The song is from the perspective of a school shooter. The songwriter of the group likes writing from the point of characters and wanted to write the song trying to get into the mind of a school shooter. For my piece to represent the mind, I did a geometric background with swirls. The shoes they talk about in the song are the Rebook pumps, so i put the back of the shoes as newspaper, since when school shooting happen, it creates a conversation about the story and about other topics, like gun control. I am not finished, but the rest of the plan is the paint the details of the shoes over the newspaper. Essentially, the newspaper is used for all the white that is on the original shoe, since I didn't want to have that much plain white. Some things I like about my piece so far is the background. It was different and fun to do. I wanted to have the design of the shoes to be more abstract and wild, to just add meaning to the craziness and confusion of the feeling behind the shooter.
The song this piece is based off of in Joanne by Lady Gaga. Joanne was her dad's sister, her aunt, who died early due to lupus. Gaga described her as always being the good girl, and Gaga felt like she always needed to be that good girl for the men in her life like her dad and her husband. When Joanne died, Gaga's dad took to the bottle, and drank very heavily. Throughout this experience, Gaga learned to grow as a woman, and became the woman the men in her life could depend on, and that she didn't have to be that perfect little girl. For my piece I demonstrated her growth as a woman into plants growing, and at each new piece of the plant growing, I put imagery that symbolized that point in her growth like for the final growth, I put imagery of her renewed better relationship with dad and the tattoos they got the symbolized their growth, she got Joanne tattooed and he got hope tattooed. In the top in glitter I put the lyric "can't wait to see you soar" which represents Joanne's legacy that she left and Gaga's growth throughout the whole experience. I am not finished with the piece yet, but some things I like so far is how the colors fit well within the piece. One thing I don't like is that the lyrics didn't come out as clear as I wanted to in glitter.
