2. Look at your body of work over the semester and choose 2 pieces that show your growth as an artist. Discuss each piece and how you grew in the following areas: application of materials, techniques and skills, artistic vision, use of the principles and elements, creativity, intuition and subject matter.
For this question I choose to compare the first major piece we did in this class which was the still life, to the last piece we did which was the artist landscape.
For this question I choose to compare the first major piece we did in this class which was the still life, to the last piece we did which was the artist landscape.
The first big piece we did in class and the first one I choose was the still life. There were multiple bottles and we had to draw from the perspective of where we were sitting. I had done still life before, but I know it's not what I am the best in. Overall it turned out better than I thought it would, and I had done it all without using a stub to blend it, which was my first time doing that. Eventually I got the hang of it, and was able to be more accurate in the different shades and values in the bottles. One thing I could work on was using more of a shade range, since I stuck to the more lighter pencils and were hesitant to use the heavier lead ones. If I did it again I would use all the pencils to get a wide range of values that would enhance my still life. The second piece I choose which was the last piece we did was the landscape painting in the style of an artist, which mine was Joan Miro. I loved how it turned out with all the bright colors and abstractness, it was my first time doing a piece more abstract and it turned out great. If I had more time I would do more layers of the colors since all of the yellows and greens were really transparent and I had to do multiple layers, but because of time I didn't get to do all the layers I had wanted to do. Between these two pieces, it shows my growth from a more realistic style to a more abstract one. I learned to work more with color and how to use different colors to mix and shade, with the painting and the other projects including the colored pencil and water color one. The pieces show my ability to take something and make a twist off of it instead of just drawing exactly what I see, like in the still life. This class has taught me to do way more preparing for the final piece than I originally would have, and it helps a lot.
