1. Discuss your decision on pen and ink techniques. Why you chose to use one or more.
I knew I wanted to include stippling since I find that for me, it looks the best, even if it takes a longer time. I did a different technique for each type of surface in the picture. For the metal around the doors and windows I used stippling, for the windows I used hatching, and for the wood I did an inventive wood pattern. I also judged which technique to use by seeing beforehand which techniques looked good together.
2. How did you use perspective? Why is perspective important?
I used persective by having the main door facing front and the windows around it going back. I also used it in the chairs, one was smaller since it was farther away. Perspective is important because it makes all the porportions right and makes it look more realistic. A chair 10 feet away isnt gonna be the same size as the one right in front in a picture, it just doesn't make sense.
3. How is texture important in your composition?
Texture is important because it can determine shadows and lights. Using pen techniques, I didn't draw hard lines to outline it, so I had to distinguish the lines using the contrast between dark and light. Texture also can be used to determine the surface, like how i used a different technique on the wood than the metal.
4. Why is value so important in this project?
Value is important because it distinguishes between different shades in the picture. The dark values determine the shades in the object and makes it appear more three dimensional. The lighter values enhance the highlight in the objects.
5. Describe your craftsmanship (how well the project if crafted technically).
I think my craftsmanship was pretty good, I made sure to measure the proportions right, and it was easy since the picture I printed out was half the size of the paper I had used, so I split it up into sections and doubled the value to determine which lines went where.
6. If you could recreate your piece what would you do differently to enhance your final outcome?
If I could recreate my piece I would make the values darker, I feel like in some areas it was to light. I would also add more detail to the initial picture. I would also make the values near the chairs better so that they wouldn't blend in as much.
7. When applying the pen and ink techniques why and how is it important to make sure you understand the concepts taught in class?
It is important so you can determine different values. If we didn't do the value chart, it would be very hard to show light and dark values. It was also important to learn the different types so we could pick and choose which ones we wanted to do, and if we wanted to do a mix of some or just one.
8. As a growing artist how do you think what you have learned will guide and better your future projects?
This project definitely taught me patience, and I took more time on it, since I had to make sure it didn't look rushed or sloopy. It introduced me to a new art type, that I can now use in future pieces. It also taught me how to work with a permanent medium rather than a pencil.
